Name: | ice-jam flood |
Acronym: | |
Description: | This is the type of flood caused by the accumulation of broken river ice that is caught in a constricted channel thereby blocking the flow of water and causing a rise (sometimes rapid) in water behind the blockage. These blockages are most frequently found in north flowing rivers at high latitudes in the norther Hemisphere. As with other floods it significance can be determined by a comparison of the stage with flood stage. |
