Name: | groundwater contamination risk |
Acronym: | |
Description: | The groundwater contamination risk is an important management indicator for assessing the quality of groundwater resources. It depends on two factors: the contamination load and the vulnerability of the aquifer to pollution. The vulnerability can be assessed from a knowledge of the depth from the surface to the water table and the aquifer porosity. Vulnerability increases as the time required for contaminants to move to the groundwater table decreases. The quantity and type of the contaminant is also important because large quantities of some contaminants may take a longer time to dissipate and persistent chemicals can not easily be degraded by natural chemical reactions. |
