Name: | surface wave |
Acronym: | |
Description: | Surface waves are one of the two main types of seismic waves. Surface waves can only move along the surface of the planet like ripples on water. They are analogous to water waves. They travel slower than body waves. Because of their low frequency, long duration, and large amplitude, they can be the most destructive type of seismic wave. This damage and the strength of the surface waves are reduced in deeper earthquakes. There are two types of surface waves: Rayleigh waves and Love waves. |
