Name: | seeweed |
Acronym: | |
Description: | Seaweed is a loose colloquial term encompassing macroscopic, multicellular, eukaryotic benthic marine algae. The term includes some members of the red, brown and green algae. Seaweeds can also be classified by use (as food, medicine, fertilizer, industrial, etc.). They are not simply plants that live in the sea; they are morphologically and physiologically distinct from both land plants and the majority of fresh-water algae. Seaweeds need to remain attached to the hard substrates on which they grow so that they do not get swept away by the sea each time the tide comes in. |
