Name: ascospore
Acronym:
Description: Sexual spore produced by fungi in the Phylum (Division) Ascomycota, often called ascomycetes. Ascospores are produced within an ascus and there are normally 8 ascospores within the ascus. The spores form following meiosis and then mitosis. The release of ascospores is normally associated with moisture, either rainfall or high humidity. As a result, ascospores are often considered a component of the wet-weather air spora.
